Greenland’s elected representatives in the Danish parliament are ready to begin the process of ending the island’s involvement in Danish politics.
“This is a process we need to get started,” said Greenland’s junior MP Sofia Rosssen. “This was something I said during the last election.”
Rossen declined to state a date for Greenland’s withdrawal from Danish domestic politics, but said it would not occur until it had assumed full administrative responsibility for its domestic affairs.
The question of whether Greenland and the Faroe Islands – Denmark’s two semi-autonomous overseas territories – should maintain their seats in parliament comes up at regular intervals Copenhagen.
Critics call it unfair that either of the territories can use their seats to determine the outcome of close general elections.
