There are currently fewer halibut in the coastal waters between eastern Greenland and Iceland than any time since 2001, and the average size of the fish has decreased by 10 cm in Disko Bay.
Biologists at the Greenland Institute for Natural Resources are therefore recommending halibut fishing be cut back on the west coast by 1600 tons this year compared to last year’s haul.
Control of the current halibut populations in the waters are split between Iceland and Greenland, and biologists are looking to find a way to manage the quotas.
The scientists also say that capelin populations off Greenland are down considerably.
