A newly discovered sea anemone can now brag that it is the animal in the world that lives furthest north.
The sea anemone was filmed by a Russian mini submarine 4.2 km under the surface of the Arctic Sea two years ago.
An article published in scientific journal Polar Biology presents the anemone as the only animal or plant life so far identified with certainty at the North Pole.
The sea anemone, which exists in small colonies, was filmed by the Russian submarines ‘MIR-1’ and ‘MIR-2 in connection with the symbolic planting of the Russian flag on the seabed of the North Pole.
Russian researchers described the sea anemone as a known species with the scientific name Bathyphellia margaritacea. They reveal that it looks it’s the only species of sea anemone able to spread in the high Arctic area up to the North Pole.
