Although the self rule government’s budget proposal continues to be negotiated with the opposition and the municipalities, there are a couple of issues that are non-negotiable, and those are two bills on new taxes affecting fisheries starting next year, writes knr.gl.
A new tax act allows taxation of all catches that bypass the Greenlandic fisheries.
One proposal includes an increase in shrimp taxes. Sea-going fishers must now pay tax when prawns are sold at 12 kroner per kilo instead of the current 13 kroner per kilo. This should provide additional 9 million kroner in the national coffers.
The second proposal, which is completely new, deals with a temporary fee on cod and halibut that are not brought ashore for further processing in Greenland. For those catches there will be charge of one kroner per each kilo for cod and two kroner for halibut. If that proposal is adopted it would provide additional 22 million kroner to the national coffers.
The proposals are seen as precursors to a final ‘resources fee’, which will become part of the long-awaited new fisheries legislation. According to the government, it is envisaged that the new charges will be incorporated into the annual budget laws.
